What is the ascendant and where are the houses in the sky? The Ascendant (Lagna) is always located at the eastern horizon—the point where the Earth meets the sky and where sunrise symbolically originates. It represents the visible beginning of the first house and anchors the entire house system in space and time.

Seeing Your Ascendant & Houses in the Sky

When you were born, it may have been day or night, but the Ascendant remains fixed at the eastern horizon regardless of visible sunlight. From this point, the houses can be visualized as a continuous spatial framework extending across the sky.

If you observe the eastern horizon and move your awareness across the sky from left to right, you can imagine the sequential unfolding of the houses: the 12th house rises just before the Ascendant, followed by the 11th and 10th houses, with the 10th culminating overhead at the meridian. From there, the arc continues downward toward the western horizon, passing through the 9th and 8th houses, and reaching the 7th house at the point of setting.

Applying this to your chart

At the time of birth, planets occupying houses 1 (the visible portion), 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, and 7 would have been positioned in the visible portion of the sky, though daylight conditions can make them harder to observe in daytime births.

The remaining houses are below the horizon and therefore not visible. Symbolically, this division is often understood as a distinction between outward and inward domains of life.

The visible houses are associated with more externally expressed areas such as career, public life, social engagement, dharma, education, travel, and aspects of identity that are readily seen by others.
