The Twelve Ādityas and the Sun

During the Sun’s annual journey through the zodiac, it is said to take on the symbolic “forms” of the twelve Ādityas, the sons of Aditi. These twelve solar deities represent different expressions of solar intelligence and consciousness as it moves through the signs.

In order, they are: Dhātā, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra, Vivasvān, Pūṣan, Parjanya, Aṁśumān, Bhaga, Tvaṣṭṛ, and Viṣṇu.

Your Sun's Placement

“The Sun takes on the qualities of the twelve Ādityas as it moves through the zodiac.”

Each Āditya can be understood as expressing a distinct thematic principle associated with its corresponding sign. For example, Mitra (associated with Gemini) relates to alliances, agreements, and social bonds. Vivasvān (associated with Virgo) is linked with service, nourishment, refinement, and sustaining collective well-being through practical means. Parjanya is associated with renewal, transformation, and ritual processes, while Viṣṇu represents preservation, expansion of consciousness, and, in some interpretations, ultimate renunciation.

Through this lens, the Sun reflects not only identity and vitality, but also the specific desires and expressions of purpose it carries into the world.

Applying this to your chart

What sign and house is your Sun placed in, and which Āditya themes appear most strongly reflected there? Do these archetypal expressions resonate with your lived experience? Exploring the stories and qualities of the twelve Ādityas can deepen your understanding of both the Sun and its role in your chart.
