Each primary Graha is associated with rulership over both odd and even signs, often interpreted through the archetypal polarity of masculine and feminine. These terms do not describe gender in a literal sense, but rather distinct modes of energy expression.
Odd (masculine) signs are generally associated with outward-directed energy, while even (feminine) signs tend to reflect inward or receptive energy. This is not a hierarchy, but a polarity through which planetary expression becomes differentiated.
For example, Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio. Aries typically expresses Mars in a direct, outward form—assertive action and visible anger. Scorpio, by contrast, often reflects a more internalized expression of Mars—contained intensity, emotional depth, and transformative inner processes.
This principle of polarity also appears in other Vedic frameworks. The six primary Chandas, as well as the six Vedic seasons (Ṛtus), often begin in even signs but unfold or manifest through odd signs. For instance, Vasant (spring) begins with the Sun’s entry into Pisces and develops through Aries.
However, manifestation is never independent of the feminine principle. Even traditionally “outward” expressions rely on receptive structures to take form. This is reflected in the relationship between opposing houses: the 2nd house of speech, resources, family, and sustenance balances the 7th house of commerce, exchange, and partnership.
